Application of Visual AEM for Dewatering and Seepage Impact Assessments

Abstract: In Australia, quantification of available water resources and careful assessment of potential future responses to extraction and withdrawal is sometimes required in order to understand and manage complex relationships that may exist between aquifers, streams and wetland areas. The analytic element method is a cost-effective and computationally efficient tool that can be used to analyse potential dewatering impacts to both groundwater and surface water resources. This paper deals with the development and application of a 2D groundwater flow model using a recently released analytic element computer code referred to as VISUAL AEM. The groundwater flow model was used to assess and quantify dewatering impacts and surface water losses within an unconfined alluvial aquifer in response to development of a conceptual quarry.
