Reproduction of Flood Flow Using Only One Depth-Hydrograph in a River Course-Theoretical Background and Computational Method

Abstract: In this study, we propose a new computational method to reproduce previous flood flows without both upstream and downstream boundary conditions, using only one depth-hydrograph at a site in between the upstream and downstream boundaries. Based on the theory of the method of characteristics (MOC), it is firstly proved that unsteady flows during flood events can be reproduced in the whole river course by using one depth hydrograph observed at only one middle site. Then, we propose a new computational method. In previously proposed method we used both shallow water equations and the time derivatives of shallow water equations, but in this study a new method containing only shallow water equations is proposed. The computational method is applied to the actual flood flow in the Uji River and is verified by comparing the reproduced hydrograph at both upstream and downstream boundaries to the observed hydrograph.
