Some Observations on Submerged Hydraulic Jumps with Blocks

Abstract: An experimental study on submerged hydraulic jumps with baffle blocks downstream of a sluice gate was conducted. Three-dimensional mean flow field was investigated for one Froude number with two submergence factors. It was observed that, similar to submerged flows with two dimensional baffle walls, the flow could be classified as either a reattaching wall jet or a deflected surface jet depending on the level of submergence. In the deflected surface jet regime, the flow between the blocks behaves like a wall-jet and directly above the blocks it behaves like a deflected jet. The deflected surface jet regime is characterized by a small surface roller ending with a hump on the water surface for small submergences. In the reattaching wall jet regime, the block has a minor effect on the flow which is limited to a small region of recirculating flow behind the block. In the deflected surface jet regime, the flow is highly three dimensional in a large zone downstream of each block resulting in an increase in interfacial mixing and energy dissipation.
