Abstract: Hydrodynamic modelling of overbank flooding in highly developed floodplains presents many challenges. The modelling of the Merah North to Burren Junction flood mitigation scheme in the Namoi Valley, NSW, presented such challenges. The aim of the modelling (using RMA2 software) was to assess the current levee and floodway system, and to provide a range of options (to government authorities and landholders) to return natural drainage patterns to the system. Three major challenges were encountered, including the accurate representation of narrow levees in the 100km2model domain, representation of a wide downstream boundary (approximately 45 km across), and the conservation of mass in the model. This paper describes these issues and how they were overcome.
