Characteristics of Sediment Transport by Flood Events in the Lower Yellow River

Abstract: “Less water and more sediment” has caused serious sedimentation and continuous riverbed rising in the Lower Yellow River (LYR). Thus, it is important to optimize flood event series for sediment transport during the flood season. Characteristics of sediment transport in the LYR were studied based on 277 flood events during the period of 1950-1985. The stepwise regression approach was used to identify the primary factors affecting sediment delivery ratio (SDR). A new formulation of SDR considering nonlinear relations among influencing factors was developed. The 95% confidence interval of the regression was quantified. It was shown that: 1) the incoming sediment coefficient and the inflow-to-outflow ratio of water volume are the two main factors that impact SDR; and 2) the ratio of water volume variation is greater than unity, that ascribed to the storage of floodplain and water injection of Dongping Lake connected to a tributary of the LYR.
