Abstract: Most of Chinese coasts are muddy, and many ports encounter the cohesive sediment deposition. One of the main factors causing sediment deposition on the waterway is flocculation. Large amounts of cohesive fine sediment from the upper reaches come to flocculate, induced by strong electrolyte sea water at the border of sea water and fresh water, which makes quick settling velocity. After flocculation experiments, it is found that the flocculation degree is deep on the clay minerals. In Chine, the main clay mineral compositions of cohesive fine sediment are illite, chlorite, kaolinite and montmorillonite. So they are studied as the basis of cohesive flocculation under the same granule, sediment concentration and salinity etc. It shows that the flocculation settling velocity decreased by the order illite, chlorite, kaolinite, montmorillonite. Furthermore, chlorite is used to show that the flocculation degree is not increased directly according to the salinity, which is closely related to the instantaneous concentration of positive ions.
