Assessing Flood Risks in a Regional Shopping Centre in Sydney, Australia

Abstract: Warringah Mall is a regional shopping centre located within the Brookvale Creek catchment in Sydney's northern suburbs. Studies in 2006,2007 and 2008 identified that Warringah Mall is flooded by overland flows and overflows from Brookvale Creek under existing conditions. The 1D/2D modelling approach that was adopted to assess existing flooding problems and structural options to reduce the flood risk to workers and visitors to Warringah Mall is outlined. In 2009 Warringah Council commissioned a Peer Review of the 2006,2007 and 2008 studies. The outcomes of this review and extensive testing of the sensitivity of 100 year Average Recurrence Interval (ARI) flood behaviour to partial blockage of inlets and overflow structures, adjustment of roughness values for residential areas and losses at major drainage structures are discussed. It is concluded that the peer review process confirmed the validity and merit of the adopted 1D/2D modelling approach. This approach was a key factor in indentifying structural and non-structural measures that will better manage flood risks at Warringah Mall.
