Abstract: In order to estimate the influence of the wall roughness on flow and scour process in curved channels, systematic hydraulic model tests were performed in a 1 m wide laboratory flume with a 90-degree bend. A wide grain size distribution was used for the sediments as they occur in mountain rivers with gravel bed. Bed morphology, free water surface, time evolution of scour, sediment transport as well as the flow field are compared for a channel with smooth and rough walls by fixing vertical ribs as roughness elements at the outer wall. Using an optimal spacing of the vertical ribs the scour depth can be reduced considerably.
