Abstract: Henry Darcy (1803-1858) contributed significantly to hydraulics with two outstanding books relating to groundwater and turbulent pipe flow. In addition, he is one of the most renowned citizens of Dijon, given that he was able to make the Paris-Marseille railways pass through his home town. This year is the 200t h birthday of a great hydraulician, a gifted engineer, a talented citizen and organizer of public works, and a benefactor of mankind by his water supply projects for a variety of European cities. Although two conferences are to be held in 2003 to commemorate Darcy, this paper would like to draw the attention on his works, and introduce two original letters that he sent to his associate Henry Bazin (1829-1917).
