Numerical Simulation of Ice Jam Progression in the Upper Niagara River

Abstract: A one-dimensional river ice model for the upper Niagara River is developed. A sensitivity analysis is conducted to examine the effects of various meteorological and hydraulic conditions on the development of ice jams on the upper Niagara River. Ice processes considered in the model are: water temperature variations, including supercooling; frazil ice generation; anchor ice evolution; suspended and surface ice transport; ice cover and jam progression and stability; and undercover ice transport, deposition and erosion. The model is calibrated using observations and data from historical ice jam events, including water level, discharge, surface ice concentration, and ice jam thickness.
