A Two-Dimensional Model for Dynamic Ice Transport and Jamming in the Upper Niagara River

Abstract: The existence of ice in rivers can have significant detrimental consequences. Of particular concern is the formation of ice jams. The analytical formulation of floating surface ice jams was first developed by Pariset and Hausser (1961). This was followed by a number of theoretical and laboratory studies (Uzuner and Kennedy 1976, Tatinclaux 1977, and Beltaos 1983). The resulting formulations were for static accumulations of floating ice fragments. The dynamics of ice transport and ice jam formation were ignored. Recently, Shen et al. (1993) developed a model for dynamic transport of river ice. In this paper a brief summary of the model formulation and its application to the upper Niagara River are presented.
