Abstract: A theory ahout the formation of frazil and skim ice is presented based on lahoratory tests, measurement results and obserrvations on rivers. Thermal processes on the water surface are described, a relation for the calculation of the surface temperature is derived and the temperature of the surface, at which primary ice particles start to be formed on the surface, is determined. In addition, the stochastic process of the entraining of the primary ice particles from the surface is described and formulae for the determination of limiting water velocities at which frazil ice runs are started are derived.
