Abstract: The concept of heating only the leading edge of trash rack bars to efficiently prevent frazil ice blockage has been investigated. Proof-of-concept tests conducted in a laboratory flume proved to be successful in preventing blockage by frazil ice. A field test was then made at a small (143-kW) hydro plant. This field test was successful at greatly reducing frazil Ice blockage. The total electrical power supplied was only 2.8 kW, or 0.26 kW/ft2.
