Abstract: The role of roughness on the transfer of heat from Rowing water to river ice covers was studied in the laboratory, An array of closely packed ice cylinders covering the free surface of an open channel flow was used to simulate the river ice cover with the roughness. The heat flux across the ice-water interface obtained from the laboratory experiments was correlated with the dimension less groups directly related to the length scale of the roughness at the interface. The small-scale features on the rough interface was found to playa prominent role on the transfer of heat across the interface. This finding was consistent with the observation in rivers. The roughness created by preferential melting around the small ice crystals was identified as the element responsible for the increase in heat flux from river flow to ice cover during the breakup of ice jams.
