Abstract: A quasi-two dimensional computer model for simulating hydraulics and thermal-ice processes in river networks is presented. The model is an extension of the single channel model (RICE) previously developed by the authors. In the present model, the flow simulation considers floodplain effects. The transverse flow distribution in a channel cross section is calculated by a streamtube method. The two-layer ice transport formulation used in the RICE model is refined and applied to the entire river, including both open water and ice-covered reaches in a consistent manner.
