Abstract: The results of a recent experimental and analytical study are used to predict the conditions under which ice ripples form on the underside of river ice covers. A relationship between the wavelength of the ripples and the flow velocity is proposed and compared with existing field data. The effect of flow depths on the wavelength-velocity relationship is examined and found to be small.
