Abstract: Field tests of the strain and the resulting stress calculations for ice shelves gave values that agreed well with the results of laboratory tests of tension and compression under uniaxial conditions. A hyperbolic sine function [equation] is proposed. It is shown that the uniaxial tension results from laboratory studies are directly related to the flexural strength values, reported with beam studies.
