Abstract: This paper presents a discussion on the method of estimating the strength of a thawing ice cover on rivers and reservoirs depending on solar radiation absorbed by ice, its application for calculating the beginning of the wind drift of ice on reservoirs taking into account wind velocity, and the ice’s disappearing date for the reservoir. The method of calculation of the equation parameters for the frequency curves of freeze-up and disappearing dates from the climatic data is described. The frequency curves are approximated by the Pearson type III equation. The evaluation of changing the ice phenomena dates and the ice-free season duration as a result of reservoir establishment on large rivers is given.
