Abstract: This study presents analytical equations for water surface profiles and boundary-layer development in nonaerated skimming flows on stepped channels. The method for calculating the water depth and the boundary- layer thickness is developed on the basis of a momentum integral equation with local skin friction. An empirical local skin friction coefficient is proposed under a given channel angle. The water surface profile and the boundary-layer development are analytically obtained, which determines the position of the section where the boundary-layer thickness is equal to the water depth. The relationship between the boundary-layer development and the loss of energy head is presented by using the energy equation in the boundary layer.
