Abstract: The construction of the new town of Louvain-la-Neuve (30000 inhabitants for a catchment area of 200 ha) needed a storage lake at the outlet of the watershed. The operation of this 1ake will be rather complex due to contradictory constraints leading to a need of discharge measurement in the storm sewer network. The design of such a measurement network for small and middle-sized collectors gave the opportunity to develop fundamental considerations about this kind of prob1ems. The different types of methods are reviewed: measuring water depth only, local velocity and water depth, or directly the discharge. Two typical difficulties in sewer measurement are emphasized: choice of convenient location of measure-ment stations and influence of transient phenomena, above all flow instabilities Possible gauges are also depicted: among these, an original capacitance gauge.
