Abstract: The slit-type ski jump was widely used in China due to its applicability associated with large discharge and narrow valley. When the slit-type ski jump is settled at the side crest spillways, the jet from it deflects, even impacts the river bank. This jet deflection mainly results from asymmetrical shock waves in ski jump, which is caused by flow rounding side pier at the side crest spillways entrance. The present paper experimentally investigated the characteristics of the jet deflection and proposed a device to control jet deflection. The results indicate that an increase of jet deflection angle results from decreasing approach flow Froude number, whereas the contraction angle of ski jump has slight effect on jet deflection. In this work, a quadrangular prism settled at the starting point of the contraction wall was used to control jet deflection by means of an additional shock wave generated by the quadrangular prism.
