Modelling Sediment Deposition in Reservoir Using Complex Model Chain and Limited Data – Focus on 1D Numerical Modelling

Abstract: This study demonstrates the effectiveness of a relatively simple model chain for long-term sediment simulations using a limited input dataset. The models achieved reasonable accuracy comparing to the measured data, applying minimal adjustments and pre -processing. The model did not capture fully the deposition patterns but matched the total masses deposited in the lake with only 14% difference to the measured data. The 1D HECRAS model required parameter tuning to that included cohesive parameters, bulk density adjustment, and particle size distribution (PSD), underscoring the value of bed sampling and inflowing sediment concentration data. While 1D modelling proved effective, capturing detailed deposition patterns and geomorphological changes may necessitate more complex 2D or 3D approaches. Further improvement of the model are possible by including more measured data and adjusting the deposition or bed change options.
