Suspended load measurement using ADCPs

Abstract:

In this chapter we discuss (i) deployment strategies (Section 3.2), (ii) the fundamental response of active acoustics to suspended sediment particles (Section 3.3), (iii) expand upon the presentation of the sonar equation in Section 2.7, by adding information relevant for suspended sediment monitoring (Section 3.4), (iv) single frequency, SF, and multi-frequency, MF, acoustic inversion techniques, that are the most common approaches to estimating SSC and particle size (Sections 3.5 and 3.6), (v) the fundamental signal processing procedures taken to ensure quality data (Section 3.7), (vi) processing steps commonly used in the inversion practices (Section 3.8). We also provide examples

of the application of both the single-frequency and multi-frequency approaches (Section 3.9) and recommend a method for computation to total suspended sediment load (Section 3.9). This Chapter ends with advice for new users wishing to implement a hydroacoustics sediment monitoring program (Section 3.11) and a brief discussion of key unknowns, intended for the research community (Section 3.12).
