Beach Morphology Change of Yamamoto Beach in Japan from 2001 Through 2013

Abstract: The 2011 tsunami caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake hit the Tohoku region of Japan and induced extensive erosion along the shoreline and beaches of the Pacific coast. The purpose of this study is to clarify the beach recovery process by investigating the characteristics of bed morphology changes, focusing on the Yamamoto Beach of Sendai Bay’s southern coast in Miyagi Prefecture. We investigated the characteristics of the bed morphology changes by using geomorphologic data from 2001, a decade before the 2011 tsunami, to 2013, two years after the disaster. We found that the morphological changes could be divided into the four periods: before the disaster, immediately before and after the disaster, one year after the disaster, and afterwards. We conclude that it is difficult for these beaches to recover in the short term because we see little morphology change one year after the disaster.
