Abstract: The slit-type flip buckets are widely employed for hydropower projects with large discharge and deep gorge. However, flow chocking or jet deflection may occurs at large discharge conditions for slit-type flip buckets placed at the many crest outlets. The effect of rounding flow near the inlet is a dominating factor resulting in jet deflection. Taking slit-type flip buckets of Gaosheng hydropower project as an example, the experimental investigations have been carried out to find the hydraulic characteristics of flow chocking and jet deflection in this study. For jet deflection control, a small deflector was placed at the contraction corner of the slit-type flip bucket to generate oblique branch flow which can weaken the strong shock wave. The experiment results have proved this small deflector was an effective element for avoiding the jet deflection.
