Abstract: Public institutions of river management are observing river discharges from a standpoint of collecting fundamental information for various purposes of disaster prevention or environment of the river. However, there are frequently missing discharge data in the monitoring database. It is significantly requested to obtain the simple and highly efficient method for estimating the missing discharge data for a complete analysis and modeling of hydrologic cycle. The authors have developed a method to estimate the missing data of river discharges. This method not only uses the available data of discharge and rainfall, but also it switches either a traditional tank model or a simple algorithm automatically. In this paper, virtual missing data of river discharge are estimated using the proposed method. The performance of the method is examined by comparing two calculated values with a true one. As a result, accuracy and efficiency of the proposed method are found to be much higher than the original tank model. The method could be a preferred choice for evaluating the missing discharge data for the practical use.
