Abstract: At the application of hydrodynamic-numeric (HN) models, which are used for the evaluation and analysis of flow behaviors, two-dimensional HN methods are used more and more in addition to the popular one-dimensional models. But the increased application of two-dimensional procedures raises some questions. Therefore the professional application-oriented use of two-dimensional HN models on the issue of hydraulic analysis will be examined within the framework of this research. The investigations focus on topics like the correct construction of the necessary calculation mesh (construction of breaking edges, item size and angles by unstructured meshes) or the execution of a skilful initialization. Other aspects are the integration of structures (weirs, bridges, culverts) in the model, stability and convergence of the computation and the significant presentation of the calculation results. An interesting challenge in the context of the named research is the development of additional tools for modelling such as the creation of interfaces to geographic information systems. The geographic information systems are almost essential for pre-and post- processing. Another aim of the analysis is to give a guidance to construct a model. Besides a geographic information system, a two-dimensional HN method, which solves the depth-averaged shallow water equations by means of an unstructured mesh and a cell-centered procedure, is used for the named studies. Investigations of flood protection at a section of the Hessian Lahn River, which is an eastern tributary of the Rhine River, will be consulted as the essential sample. The several experiences gathered and tools developed concerning two-dimensional modelling will be presented in this paper.
