Abstract: In this paper, the mixing process in the near-field dam break flows have been examined numerically using the Lagrangian based smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) and Eulerian based volume of fluid (VOF) method. The mixing profiles and interfaces have been evaluated with experimental observations. Results suggest that both models are able to capture the key features in the experimental observation. The ability for SPH model to provide accurate prediction is limited by the high viscous effect near the solid boundary, whereas the VOF model tends to smooth out the find details of the interaction between water bodies.
