Investigation of Aquatic Ecology in the Middle and Lower Reaches of the Yalu Tsangpo River

Abstract: The middle and lower reaches of the Yalu Tsangpo River (the Yalu Tsangpo River for short in the following paper) are flowing from Lizi in Zhongba Coutry to Baxika in Muotuo Coutry. Ecology in the Yalu Tsangpo River Basin is almost in natural state. It is very important to do investigation on aquatic ecology in this basin. From 2009 to 2012 the authors have sampled macroinvertebrates from 15 sites in the Yalu Tsangpo River Basin. The 15 sites were located in 5th order streams, 7th order streams and 8th order streams. In the streams with the three orders, altogether 89 taxa of macroinvertebrates belonging to 45 families and 86 genera were identified. Among them were 13 annelids, 3 mollusks, 71 arthropods and 2 other animals. The results revealed that: taxa richness in 5th order streams, 7th order streams and 8th order streams decreased successively; community composition showed great difference among 5th order streams, 7th order streams and 8th order streams. The Jaccard similarity coefficient S J among communities in 5th order streams, 7th order streams and 8th order streams was low, with the highest S J only 0. 1923. Human activities and climate change have some influences on ecology in the Yalu Tsangpo River Basin. From the view of sustainable development of ecological environment, it is very important to protect ecology in the Yalu Tsangpo River Basin. It is suggested that implementation of measures for natural forest protection and reforestation can reduce water and soil loss rate and river sediment discharge, thus, maintain river ecological health.
