Abstract: The paper describes a possible mechanism of genesis of the step-pool sequences. Steps and pools have been observed in steep natural water streams in presence of a poorly sorted grain size distributions. This kind of bed forms are often described in the literature as weirs transversal to the channel, made by pebbles, cobbles or boulders (steps) and followed by a mild zone (pools). Nevertheless the origin of these morphological structures is nowadays uncertain. In order to investigate the possible origin of such a kind of bed forms a laboratory analysis has been conduced in a recirculating flume, using different grain size distributions and different liquid and solid discharges. This analysis has shown several types of bedforms assimilable from a morphological point of view to step-pool sequences.
