Abstract: The essence of understanding is obtained through discovery and knowledge. Surface water bodies such as lakes, reservoirs and estuaries are complex physical systems. In order to understand them we need tools that are capable of providing the means for discovery and the dissemination of knowledge. This paper outlines a powerful new mechanism for visualising the processes occurring in a water body at a variety of temporal and spatial scales. It also details the role of knowledge and collaboration in providing a comprehensive information system in an online environment. The Online Lake and Reservoir Information System provides the tools required to develop and advance our level of understanding.
