Abstract: This paper presents an application of the theory of minimum rate of available energy dissipation, an applied formula of the theory and other equations, based on which a mathematic model was established for riverbed sedimentation processes and optimal transport of sediment in fluvial rivers. Formula of water and sediment transport in the Lower Yellow River were developed based on results from the model, and various phenomena of riverbed deformation in fluvial river were explained. Critical values of optimal transport of water and sediment were computed with field data from various reaches in the Lower Yellow River, and methods to improve the operation scheme of Xiaolangdi reservoir were suggested.
