Abstract: The abstract presents findings of the layer-by-layer study of organic matter (OM) and mercury distribution in river-ice cores collected near Khabarovsk in the Amur River mainstream and Pemzenskaya and Amurskaya channels. Conditions favourable for sulfate reduction and methylation of mercury were recorded in the ice (70-117 cm) on the right bank of the Amur mainstream, which is in the trans-boundary area under the impact of the Songhua River runoff. Among these conditions are high levels of OM, the presence of heterotrophic bacteria, which are destructors of high-molecular compounds and potential producers of metabolites with methyl radicals, and the activity of the sulfate-reducing bacteria resistant to mercury.
