Distribution and Maximum Seepage Capacity in Rock Loose River Structure

Abstract: Loose rock river structures in macro-roughness conditions present high seepage capacity, particularly in the transient region. The sub-vertical water movement can strongly affect the minimum vital flow, reducing the qualitative characteristics of a river stream and the fish habitat. The paper aims to investigate the seepage flow distribution in rock loose river structures in macro-roughness conditions and in presence of high slopes. A simple seepage model, based on the water distribution along the bed material and the stream characteristics, has been proposed. The experimental tests carried out at the PITLAB centre, University of Pisa, Pisa, Italy, confirm the validity of the model. The tests were performed in several hydraulics boundary conditions, and particle size features.
