Abstract: The hydraulic research has been greatly progressed as the Chinese hydropower projects have been developed in a fast speed since the 1990s. Main research activities are concentrated on the energy dissipation and high speed flow as dam heights reach 200m and discharge flow over 20,000m3/s or even to 40,000m3/s. The special parameters L/H vs. P in typical Chinese dams are compared with the world level. The paper presents main achievements are the layout and arrangements of energy dissipators in high dams with large discharge flows, especially on the dams built in very narrow valleys. Some cases show the different special experiences on high gravity dams, high arch dams and high rockfill dams.
