Abstract: Scour of rectangular buildings located in floodplains is analysed, based on systematic experimentation and by comparison with bridge pier and abutment scours. The effects of sediment compactness, approach Froude number, building geometry and transverse building position have been analyzed. A preliminary scour depth equation is established that allows specification of the maximum scour depth as a function of time.
