Abstract: The aim of the present work is to investigate, numerically and experimentally, the interaction of a density current with an array of in-line rigid and emergent cylinders. The laboratory tests were carried out employing the lock-exchange technique. The dense fluid was obtained by a mixture of fresh water, salt and rhodamine while the ambient fluid was obtained by a solution of clear denatured ethanol and freshwater. The numerical modelling was performed using Large Eddy Simulation (LES). The results show a good agreement between LES and laboratory tests. Within the array the current suffers a loss of speed within the array due to the impact and the front position did not vary linearly. The interaction with the cylinders decreases the entrainment and mixing in the flow at a local level, due to the decreasing of kinetic energy and dissipation in the array.
