Evaluating the Applicability of Lisst-200X-Derived Turbidity-Ss Relationships Using a Recirculating Water Flume

Abstract: Recent unusual rainfall events in Korea have heightened issues related to turbidity, erosion, and sedimentation. Starting from Typhoon Rusa in 2002 to recent events like Typhoons Maysak and Haishen, prolonged turbidity in reservoirs and hydraulic and environmental damage, including the destruction of hydrophilic facilities, have been observed due to sediment inflows. Research on monitoring technology is underway to address these issues. Although turbidity and suspended sediment (SS) are mainly measured for turbidity monitoring, limitations exist in obtaining continuous time-series SS data. Conventional turbidity-SS relationships lack accuracy due to intermittent data and differences in the Clay: Silt: Sand ratios. Thus, a continuous turbidity-SS relationship is required. With Laser In-Situ Scattering and Transmissometry (LISST-200X), which can continuously acquire particle size and volume concentration data, applications in rivers have increased. This study aims to improve the turbidity-SS relationship by particle size (Clay: Silt: Sand ratio) using LISST-200X and YSI-EXO in hydraulic experiments.
