Abstract: The achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG6) is significantly behind schedule, with Capacity Development identified as a crucial accelerator for progress. Current paper examines the challenges and opportunities in developing effective capacity-building programs, particularly focusing on strengthening national government institutions in Africa. Three major initiatives of the UN 2023 Water Conference's Water Action Agenda are presented. These are: the SDG6 capacity development initiative, the Global Water Education Network, and the Water and Development Partnership Programme. These initiatives aim to provide instruments and support for organizations in Global South countries to enhance their capacity for implementing water-related SDGs. Further on the analysis explores key questions regarding impact factors in capacity development, effectiveness of various activities, the role of learning alliances and partnerships, and investment considerations in the Global South. The findings aim to contribute to the SDG6 Global Acceleration Framework and support broader capacity development initiatives in the water sector.
