Abstract: To protect and improve the water environment in the Bohai Sea, the characteristics and mechanism of water circulation and self-purification ability under tides, winds and waves were comprehensive examined in this paper. A coupled hydrodynamic model was constructed to incorporate these factors, and the water age model was set up on this basis. The spatial distribution of residual current and water age was obtained with further analysis of seasonal distribution of age. Based on the topography and wind statistical characteristics of the Bohai Sea, the wave influence on water exchange was primary analyzed during the extreme conditions. The results show that: 1) Tides and winds are dominant factors on water exchange, while waves have little influence at the basin scale in the long term. The water age distribution under the influence of wind exhibits clear seasonal characteristics. 2) Under the influence of tide, wind and waves, the water age is concentrated in the Bohai Bay and the top of the Liaodong Bay, while in the Laizhou Bay and the central of the Bohai Sea is relatively small. The effect of waves on water exchange are restricted to local region. 3) Through the analysis of extreme scenes, high wind speed and long wind fetch will lead to wave accumulation. In the nearshore area, the impact of waves is obvious due to wave breaking caused by the shallower topography.
