A Study of Potential Mitigation Measures for Storane, a Hydropeaked River in Norway

Abstract: This study investigates a measure to mitigate ecological impacts of hydropeaking in the Storåne River, Norway. Using a 2D HEC-RAS model derived from bathymetric LiDAR data, the reconnection of a frequently drying side channel was simulated by introducing a small trench to sustain flow during low -discharge conditions. Results indicate that diverting a minor share of residual flow into the side channel improves hydraulic connectivity, increases wetted area, enhances habitat diversity, and reduces stranding risk, while having considerably minor effects on the main channel. The findings suggest that targeted in -stream measures can locally mitigate hydropeaking impacts without substantially limiting hydropower operation.
