Panjin Ice Observation Station: A Brackish Coastal Lake Facility for Ice and Environmental Research

Abstract: The Panjin Ice Observation Station (PIOS), established under the administration of Dalian University of Technology (DUT), is located at the Hanzhang Lake - a brackish coastal lake within the Liaodong Bay of the Bohai Sea in northeast China. The unique site serves as an integrated platform for both education and advanced scientific research on ice. In terms of education, a training school on ice in-situ investigation technology was held in the winter of 2024-2025. This school combined on-ice training fieldwork and featured theoretical lectures by well-known scholars of ice research. A total of 34 early-career researchers received systematic training in the fundamental theories and field techniques for studying the physical, mechanical, optical, and electromagnetic properties of both ice and snow. Regarding scientific research, PIOS supports continuous, long-term observation of lake ice and water quality through deploying a floating remote observation system (FROS), equipped with automated weather stations and submerged sensors. The FROS enables continuous monitoring of air temperature, wind speed, humidity, radiation, temperature profiles of snow/ice/water/sediment, and ice thickness. This allows us to capture the full seasonal cycle of lake ice, from initial freeze-up and stable growth to spring melting. Simultaneously, key water quality parameters, such as nitrogen, phosphorus, chlorophyll-a, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, and transparency, can be systematically tracked to serve the study on water quality evolution beneath ice. PIOS welcomes ice researchers from around the world to conduct scientific research and educational activities.
