The IAHR Webinar on Seaweed nature-based solutions for coastal resilience, held on April 17, 2024, explored innovative approaches to enhancing coastal resilience through Nature-Based Solutions (NBS). The session focused on the potential of natural ecosystems, particularly kelp forests, to bolster coastal protection while simultaneously preserving biodiversity and providing vital ecosystem services essential for human wellbeing. The webinar featured discussions on two pivotal projects: the BlueForesting project, which emphasized the ecological significance and restoration of kelp ecosystems, and the AQUABREAK project, which demonstrated how seaweed aquaculture can be utilized as NBS to reduce wave energy and improve coastal resilience. These case studies highlighted the role of seaweed-based ecosystems in addressing both ecological and technical challenges in coastal management.
