Physical meeting of the IAHR Executive Committee held in Madrid

IAHR Executive Committee Meeting in Madrid, Spain

Last week, on 20-21 February 2024, the IAHR Executive Committee Meeting was hosted in Madrid by CEDEX, the Centre for Hydrographic Studies dedicated to freshwater, and the Centre for Harbours and Coastal Studies working in the marine field.

The current Executive Committee comprises the following members: Philippe Gourbesville, President, Amparo López Jiménez, Vice President, Ana Maria da Silva, Vice President, Mohamed S. Ghidaoui, Vice President, Emily Wang, Secretary General , Ramon Gutiérrez Serret, Secretary General, Hyoseop Woo, Past Vice President, Guillaume Stahl, co-opted member, Lance Gore, co-opted member and Tom Soo, IAHR Executive Director.

La Granja in SegoviaThe EC members discussed the overall management of IAHR as well as the strategic directions and highlight initiatives for the upcoming years. The meeting also addressed key actions and matters regarding IAHR expert communities, publications, events, capacity building and partnerships, as well as approaches to major topics including climate change, energy transition, food security and nature, resilience against hazards and disasters, and digital transformation.

Ana Maria da Silva participated in a workshop, “The State of the Art of Sediment Management in Rivers and Reservoirs” with CEDEX, the General Directorate for Water, and the Spanish River Basin Authorities and gave a talk on“Towards a Deeper Understanding of Secondary Motion in Meandering Streams.”

During the week, agreements were signed with both the Spanish School of Civil Engineers and the Spanish Institute of Engineers, two institutions which group together various national engineering associations. The purpose of these agreements is to establish the framework for collaboration between the CICCP and IAHR, facilitating the exchange of knowledge in their respective areas of activity.

The EC also toured the hydraulic heritage works of the gardens of the Royal Palace of La Granja de San Ildelfonso in Segovia on Thursday and visited its unique fountains, where a 100-year-old hydraulic system remains in use.

The EC meets monthly online and plans to meet again physically in Wuhan in October during the 24th IAHR Asia Pacific Division Congress.
