IAHR TRAINING COURSES SERIES

IAHR Training Course on Shallow mixing interfaces and their role in controlling flow, mixing and sediment transport at river confluences

27 October- 3 November 2025

Programme  Fluvial Hydraulics TC  IAHR Training Courses Series

 Course Introduction

This IAHR Training Course explores in depth the physics of shallow mixing layers and interfaces, focusing on the related transport processes that occur both in controlled (canonical) scenarios and in natural environments such as river confluences. Emphasis is placed on how the structure and spatial development of the mixing interface are influenced by factors such as density contrasts between incoming flows, channel bathymetry, confluence angle, and bed roughness.

Participants will be introduced to state-of-the-art laboratory experiments, field campaigns, and numerical simulations that shed light on the flow structure and dynamics at river confluences. The course highlights the critical role of large-scale turbulence in shaping sediment transport, water quality, and biodiversity patterns, recognising confluences as essential nodes in river networks, with implications at both local and basin scales.

By integrating experimental and numerical approaches, this course offers a unique opportunity to gain comprehensive knowledge of the multi-scale processes at river confluences. Attendees will also benefit from interactive sessions, with opportunities to engage directly with leading researchers in the field.

 Learning goals

By the end of the course, participants will:

  • Understand the fundamental physics of shallow mixing interfaces and their relevance in riverine systems.

  • Recognise the key physical parameters influencing flow structure and mixing in confluences.

  • Become familiar with experimental, field-based, and numerical methods used to study flow and transport processes.

  • Appreciate the ecological and socio-economic significance of river confluences in sediment routing, water quality, and biodiversity.

  • Be able to interpret and analyse field and simulation data in the context of shallow mixing processes.

 For whom

This course is designed for:

  • Early-career researchers, PhD candidates, and postgraduate students in hydraulics, environmental engineering, and geosciences.

  • Professionals and academics interested in sediment transport, ecohydraulics, and river system modelling.

  • Practitioners involved in river basin management, water conservancy planning, and environmental assessment.

No advanced background in numerical modelling is required, although a general understanding of fluid mechanics will be beneficial.
