International Journal of River Basin Management (JRBM) | Vol. 21. Issue 2, 2023

JRBM_I_21_2_COVER.jpgThe Journal of River Basin Management (JRBM) plays a specific role in promoting a cross-sectorial approach encompassing all aspects of river and floodplain management, with a truly global perspective. The Journal is a response by the scientific and professional community to the World Water Vision and calls for an integrated approach to water resources management.

 Overview

The second Issue of volume 21 of JRBM is now available, and brings together articles that touch on very different topics, showing the need for an interdisciplinary approach to tackle water-related issues. The impact of climate change and land use/land cover alterations is investigated from multiple points of view, spanning from modelling to societal perception, underlining that those are major drivers for both hydrological and morphological variations in rivers worldwide. Flood hazard remains one of the major challenges to be addressed in the future to allow for sustainable development of communities located along watercourses, and this can be done by combining innovative numerical modelling with hazard mapping. Several articles focus on the local scale, evaluating the impact of man-made structures like bridge piers and dams or natural in-stream vegetation on river hydro-morphodynamics, and highlighting interesting approaches that can be replicated in other contexts. All of the manuscripts collected in this Issue are worth reading, as they report clearly on the actual state-of-the-art in the management of rivers at both the basin and local scale, and point out open questions that should be addressed in the future by both researchers and water managers.
