Abstract: The Italian “tradition” in the field of fish pass study, construction and monitoring is somewhat poor and the design of a fish pass is often a “photocopy” of an example found in international literature without any adaptation being made in consideration of the site features or to the biological requirements. In the last 5-6 years there has, however, been an increasing interest in this subject and the authors in particular have been involved in several rehabilitation projects of existing weirs with fish passes. This paper presents a synthetic overview of the most recent design initiatives developed by the authors in some regions throughout Italy which could be a useful technical and operative contribution for a wider and correct application of such devices in the national context. Some projects have been concluded and tested, others have been constructed but not yet tested and others are still under construction.
