Abstract: Irregular topographies imply the presence of a source term in the shallow-water equations that is related to the local bed slope. The discretisation of the source term in a numerical model can lead to erroneous results such as a non constant discharge in a steady flow simulation. Three different schemes, based on three different Riemann solvers, for computing the inter-cell fluxes and accounting for the bed slope source term are presented. The schemes are first applied to steady flow test cases with analytical solution to test their performances in terms of discharge conservation. Then, an application to a dam-break flow is presented. Experimental data obtained at the Universite catholique de Louvain are compared with the numerical simulation results. The differences between the performance of the numerical schemes appear to be less important under fast transient flow conditions than under steady conditions.
