Abstract: Stepped channel flows are characterized as aerated flows, and it is important to estimate the energy head of aerated flows for the hydraulic design of stepped channels. Recently, the authors proposed a method for estimating the energy head of skimming flows Ew by using a clear water depth. But, the energy head of aerated flows E in stepped channels has not been established. This paper presents a method for estimating the energy head of aerated flows E in stepped channels, and the relation between E and Ew is clarified. Further, the relation between the aerated flow velocity and the velocity from the clear water depth is shown.
