South-to-North Water Transfer: China' S Water Project of the 21st Centrury

Abstract: The South-to-North water transfer project is a crucial measure to alleviate hazards resulted from the severe water shortage in the Northern part of China and to prevent further damages to the local economy and ecosystem. This project immediately became a controversy when it was first proposed half a century ago, and its feasibility study took nearly 40 years to complete. Among all the interbasin water transfer projects in China, the South-to-North water transfer project is the largest, and its environmental impact will be the most profound, affecting the two major river basins of China, i. e., the Yangtze River and the Yellow River basins. This paper presents a brief review of the project and issues related to its engineering aspects and environmental impacts.
